The Toirano Caves, a short drive from Balestrino, are among the most significant prehistoric sites in Liguria and make an excellent half-day excursion. The cave system extends for several kilometers through the limestone hills and contains both spectacular geological formations — stalactites, stalagmites, and curtains of flowstone in vivid colours — and remarkable evidence of Paleolithic human and cave bear occupation.
Guided tours run year-round and cover the Grotta della Basura (Witch's Cave) and the Grotta di Santa Lucia, the latter with Christian use dating to the medieval period. The prehistoric gallery, with its preserved footprints and bear skulls, is the most compelling section. The caves maintain a constant temperature of around 15°C regardless of outside conditions, making them a welcome retreat in summer.
