Chiesa di San Nicolò

The parish church of San Nicolò is the dominant building in Calice Ligure, its baroque façade and oversized dome visible from a distance across the valley. The interior is ornate for a small village church, with stucco decoration and lateral pillars supporting the dome. An oratory dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo stands alongside the main church.

The building occupies a prominent position in the village centre and the surrounding small piazza is the natural gathering point of Calice Ligure. The church is normally open for daily mass and can usually be visited in the morning or late afternoon on weekdays.

A story
The current church was built in the eighteenth century directly over the remains of a thirteenth-century structure — an unusually late replacement, suggesting the earlier building served the community for five centuries before requiring rebuilding. The dome, disproportionately large for a village church, was intended to assert the prestige of the local Del Carretto lords who commissioned it.
