Cadibona Pass

The Cadibona Pass (Colle di Cadibona), a few kilometres south of Cengio, marks the accepted geographical boundary between the Alps and the Apennines — the point where the arc of the Alps ends and the long backbone of the Italian peninsula begins. It is a modest col by mountain standards, easily crossed by road, but historically significant as the gateway between the Ligurian coast and the Po plain.

The area is pleasant walking country, with forested ridges, occasional viewpoints, and the characteristic mixed woodland of the western Ligurian hinterland. It is not a dramatic destination but has a certain satisfaction for those who enjoy geographical curiosities — the point where one of Europe's great mountain ranges technically ends.

A story
Geographers have long argued about where the Alps end and the Apennines begin. Cadibona — the col just south of Cengio — is one of the accepted answers: the watershed that divides rivers flowing north to the Po from those flowing south to the Ligurian Sea. Stand here and you are technically at the boundary between two mountain ranges.
