Peagna

Hilltop medieval hamlet above Ceriale with frescoed cemetery church

Peagna is the old hill village that Ceriale grew up below. A narrow lane winds up through terraced gardens — geraniums, basil, lemon trees — to a cluster of stone houses that have barely changed since the Middle Ages. The village is tiny and largely residential, but the climb rewards with views over the Riviera delle Palme and the island of Gallinara offshore.

The cemetery church at the edge of the village contains fragmentary 15th- and 16th-century frescoes worth seeing if you can get inside. Peagna also hosts an annual summer cultural festival and book fair that draws visitors from across the province. The walk up from Ceriale takes about 20 minutes on foot — a good way to escape the beach crowds and see a different side of the Ligurian coast.
