Ligurian Hill Walks

The hills behind Diano San Pietro are covered in a network of old mule tracks and footpaths that connect the scattered villages of the Ligurian hinterland. The terrain is typical of inland Liguria: terraced olive groves, dry stone walls, Mediterranean scrub, and occasional views down to the coast. The walking is easy to moderate and rarely crowded.

A good half-day loop from Diano San Pietro goes through Diano Castello (a medieval village with a ruined castle, about 2 kilometres north) and back via the olive grove terraces. The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, the long-distance ridge walk that runs the full length of Liguria, passes about 10 kilometres north of the village. Maps of the local trail network are available from the tourist office in Diano Marina.
