Cattedrale di San Maurizio e Compagni Martiri

Baroque cathedral on Porto Maurizio's headland with views across the coast

The Cathedral of San Maurizio sits at the highest point of Porto Maurizio, its pale neoclassical bulk visible from a long way along the coast. Construction started in the 18th century and the building was completed in stages, with the interior finished in a restrained neoclassical style — a single nave with side chapels and paintings from the Ligurian baroque tradition. The exterior terrace commands one of the best panoramas in the town: on a clear day you can see along the coast toward France to the west and the Ligurian Apennines behind.

The cathedral replaced an earlier Romanesque church that stood on the same site, some traces of which are visible in the lower walls. It's freely accessible during the day and is still used as the main parish church for Porto Maurizio. The area around it — within the Parasio quarter — is the quietest part of the old town.
