Parasio

Medieval hilltop quarter of Porto Maurizio with narrow caruggi and sea views

Parasio is the oldest part of Porto Maurizio, a medieval quarter that sits on the headland above the harbour. The lanes here — proper Ligurian caruggi, often no wider than outstretched arms — run between tall painted houses and link small squares that open suddenly to views over the sea. The whole quarter is closed to traffic, which makes it unusually quiet for a town of this size.

The main route in climbs from Piazza Parasio, a pleasant square with a belvedere overlooking the Ligurian coast. From there narrow alleys lead in every direction, past the Oratorio di San Giovanni Battista with its sculpted facade, and up to the Cathedral of San Maurizio at the top. Getting lost here is easy and deliberate — the quarter is small enough that you'll always find your way back to the sea.

A story
Parasio was once a separate commune from the rest of Porto Maurizio, walled off on the hilltop with a distinct identity and governance. The walls came down in the 19th century, but the quarter still feels like a village inside a town — its lanes too narrow for cars, its rhythms largely unchanged.
