Tellaro

Tiny clifftop fishing village considered one of Italy's most beautiful

Tellaro sits on a narrow cliff about 5 km south of Lerici, perched above the sea in a way that makes it look as if it grew from the rock itself. The village has no through road — you park at the edge and walk in. The cluster of coloured houses, the church at the cliff's lip, and the total absence of anything commercial combine to make it one of the more photogenic villages on the Ligurian coast.

The walk from Lerici to Tellaro takes about an hour and a half along the cliff path — a genuine coastal trail with views across the gulf. A boat from Lerici harbour takes 20 minutes. The village has a couple of small restaurants and a café; arrive early or late in summer if you want a table. Swimming from the rocks below the village is possible but requires some agility.

A story
Tellaro's church of San Giorgio stands at the very edge of the cliff with its apse overhanging the sea. Local legend says the village was saved from a Saracen raid in the 16th century when an octopus — wrapped around the church bell rope — rang the alarm and woke the sleeping villagers. The octopus still appears in Tellaro's coat of arms, a piece of heraldry you are unlikely to encounter anywhere else in Italy.
