Chiesa di San Lorenzo, Ponte

The parish church of San Lorenzo at the hamlet of Ponte is the oldest and most architecturally distinguished building in the commune. Built in 1445 and subsequently enlarged and altered, it preserves a fine Gothic facade in brick: a pointed-arch main portal, a circular rose window above it, and a slender campanile with three rows of paired lancet windows.

The interior was renovated in the baroque style and has little of the Gothic feel left, but the facade facing the small square at Ponte is worth stopping to look at. The church is normally unlocked during the day.

A story
The church has been modified many times over six centuries, but the original 1445 Gothic facade in brick — with its pointed-arch portal, rose window, and three-tiered campanile — was considered too beautiful to replace and was left largely intact through subsequent baroque renovations inside.
