Santuario di Nostra Signora del Suffragio

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Suffrage is Recco's parish church, a Baroque foundation entirely rebuilt after Allied bombing destroyed the original in 1943-44. The new church, consecrated in 1960, sits prominently on Piazza San Giovanni Battista; the dome is visible across the town. Inside, a 17th-century wooden statue of the Madonna survived the war and is the focus of the September pilgrimage.

It is not a great work of architecture, but the story it tells — bombs that obliterated a town twice in a year, then a community rebuilding the church before the houses — is the story of much of post-war Liguria. Worth a short stop.
