Bergeggi Island

A short kayak paddle or boat trip from the Spotorno or Bergeggi seafront brings you to the small island that anchors the bay. The island is uninhabited and a regional nature reserve, with sea caves around its base — the Grotta Marina is the largest, navigable for several tens of metres — and the ruins of the ancient hermitage on the small summit.

Landing requires a permit available from the reserve office in Bergeggi or, more usually, joining a boat tour from one of the operators on the main beach. The surrounding waters are part of an Area Marina Protetta and good for snorkelling: clear visibility, posidonia meadows, octopus, and the occasional grouper.

A story
The small limestone island a kilometre offshore is a protected marine reserve and home to a fifth-century Christian shrine to St Eugene the African — bishop of Carthage, exiled here in 484. The ruined chapel was a pilgrimage site through the Middle Ages and the foundations are still visible at the summit.
