The medieval castle perched on the ridge directly behind the town is largely a ruin — a few stretches of curtain wall, the base of a square tower, and the ghost of a bailey. It was built to control the coastal road and the small harbour below, then dismantled in stages during the long Genoese-Savoyard struggles for Liguria.
A footpath climbs up from the upper part of the old town in around twenty minutes. The view from the top covers Bergeggi island, the bay of Noli, and on a clear day the snow line of the Maritime Alps inland. Take water and decent shoes; the path is rough.
