San Giovanni Battista, Bardino Vecchio

The parish church of San Giovanni Battista in the upper hamlet of Bardino Vecchio is the most striking church in the Tovo area. Its Gothic bell tower, with two rows of double-arched windows, rises above the medieval village in a way that rewards a short detour from the main road.

The interior is modest but the tower is worth coming for on its own. Bardino Vecchio itself retains some of the atmosphere of a medieval hilltop settlement — narrow lanes, stone houses, and views out over the valley.
