Alta Via dei Monti Liguri

The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri is a long-distance walking route that crosses the Ligurian Apennines along the main ridge, and the Trebbia Valley section passes through some of the wildest and quietest terrain on the route. The path here stays high above the valley floor, crossing open grasslands and beech forests with long views south toward the Mediterranean and north into the Po Plain. In clear weather the sea is visible from the ridge.

Day walks from the valley villages — particularly from the hamlet of Barbagelata at 1,100 metres — give access to the best sections of the route without requiring a multi-day commitment. The terrain is moderate, the paths are marked, and the summer wildflowers on the high meadows are exceptional. The ridge sections around Monte Antola, a few kilometres north, are the finest; Monte Antola itself is a regional park and can be combined with the Alta Via walks.

A story
The Alta Via dei Monti Liguri runs for 440 kilometres along the Ligurian Apennine ridge from Ventimiglia near the French border to the pass above La Spezia. It was created in the 1970s partly to revive flagging interest in the mountain interior at a time when all tourism was flowing toward the coast. Sections of the route follow ancient mule tracks used by pilgrims and salt merchants for centuries before the coastal roads existed.
