Varazze Beach

Varazze's beach is a classic Ligurian pebble beach stretching the length of the seafront, backed by the coastal promenade and the historic centre behind it. Like most Ligurian beaches, it is divided between free public sections and stabilimenti balneari (beach clubs) that rent sun loungers and umbrellas. The water is clear and the swimming generally good, sheltered somewhat by the headlands to either side of the bay.

The beach faces directly south, which means it catches good sun for most of the day. The eastern end near the marina is quieter. The western end, closer to the town centre, has more facilities and gets busier in July and August when Genoese families descend on the Riviera delle Palme for summer holidays.

A story
The Romans called Varazze "Ad Navalia" — meaning "at the shipyards" — because ships were built on this beach for over a thousand years. The same dark Ligurian pebbles that visitors sunbathe on today were once the work surfaces of a major Mediterranean shipbuilding industry. The last wooden boat was built in Varazze in the early 20th century, and today the beach is given over entirely to sunbathers and bathers.
