Gardone Waterfront

The lakeside promenade through Gardone Riviera is one of the nicest on the western shore of Lake Garda: wide, largely traffic-free, and lined with oleanders, palms, and the faded facades of old hotels that once catered to northern European aristocrats wintering here. It takes about twenty minutes to walk from one end of the village to the other at a gentle pace, with benches facing the water at regular intervals.

The microclimate here is among the warmest on the lake — Gardone was popular with Victorian and Edwardian travellers precisely because lemon trees and oleanders grow without winter protection. The lake views are good from anywhere along the promenade, and on clear days you can see across to the eastern shore. In the evening, the light on the water is very good, and the cafes along the front fill up with locals in a way that the busier resorts further north rarely achieve.
