The old Ponale road leaves Riva on the western side of town and climbs along ledges cut into the cliff above the lake. It is one of the classic walks and bike rides of northern Garda: tunnels, stone walls, sharp drops, and repeated views back over Riva and Torbole.
You do not need to do the whole route to Lake Ledro for it to count. Even the first stretch gives you the drama: lake below, limestone above, and the wind switching direction as the day warms.
