The stretch of Tuscan coast between Livorno and Piombino is called the Costa degli Etruschi, after the pre-Roman civilisation that dominated this region. Bibbona sits at roughly the midpoint of this strip, which makes it a good base for exploring both north and south. The coast alternates between sandy beaches backed by pine forest and rocky headlands with sea views, all largely free of the heavy development that has damaged other parts of the Italian coast.
The Etruscan connection is real and visible: the Populonia headland to the south has Etruscan necropoli that can be visited, and the entire hinterland between the coast and the internal hills was densely settled Etruscan territory. The Museo Etrusco in Populonia Alta and the Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro near Campiglia Marittima are both worth combining with a beach day if you have a car.
