Villa Bibbiani and Botanical Garden

A 16th-century Frescobaldi villa on the Bibbiani hills above Montereggi was transformed in the 19th century by Cosimo Ridolfi into a Romantic-style landscape park. Ridolfi, an agronomist and politician, planted the park with trees from around the world — the collection now numbers around 120 species, making it one of the more unusual botanical gardens in Tuscany.

The garden is designed in the English landscape style, with winding paths, ornamental water features, and specimen trees set against views of the Arno valley. Giacomo Puccini was among the regular guests during the Ridolfi era. Visiting hours and access vary; check locally before making a special journey.

A story
Puccini was a regular visitor to Villa Bibbiani in the late 19th century, drawn by the hospitality of the Ridolfi family and the quiet of the Montalbano hills. Whether the landscape influenced any of his operas is debated, but he clearly found the place congenial.
