Piazza Marsilio Ficino is the heart of Figline's historic centre, named after the town's most famous son. The square is surrounded by a medieval loggia on one side and the Palazzo Pretorio on another, with a statue of Ficino at the centre. The loggia gives the square its character — it was built in the 14th century for the town's merchants and still frames the daily life of the town.
Marsilio Ficino (1433–1499) was a Renaissance philosopher and priest who translated the complete works of Plato and Plotinus into Latin at Cosimo de' Medici's request. His translations and commentaries are one of the foundations of Renaissance Humanism. The statue was erected in the 19th century and shows him with a book — appropriate, given that he spent most of his life reading, translating, and writing.
