Fuori Porta

Excellent wine bar just beyond the city walls near Porta San Miniato, with 1,000+ wines and good crostini

Address Via Monte alle Croci 10, Florence

Fuori Porta (literally 'Outside the Gate') sits just beyond the Porta San Miniato in the city wall, at the start of the climb toward San Miniato al Monte. It has operated as a wine bar since 1990 and has built a reputation as one of Florence's best enotece, with a list of over 1,000 wines covering Tuscany in depth and ranging across Italy and beyond. The terrace out front is shaded in summer.

The food — primarily crostini with various toppings, cheese, cured meats, and simple pasta dishes — is designed to accompany wine rather than stand alone. The house selection by the glass is well-chosen and changes regularly. The bar is most lively at aperitivo time (6-8pm) and at dinner; lunch service is quieter. The location near the city gate means it attracts a mixture of Florentines who live in the Oltrarno hills, walkers heading up to San Miniato, and visitors who have done their research. A consistently good option for an evening drink in a neighbourhood with otherwise limited wine bar options.
