San Lorenzo

Brunelleschi church with Medici tombs and Michelangelo library

Address Piazza San Lorenzo, 50123 Florence

Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, consecrated the original church on this site in 393. Cosimo the Elder had it enlarged and remodelled by Brunelleschi. Inside are works by Rosso Fiorentino, Desiderio da Settignano, Donatello, and Bronzino. The church is flanked by Brunelleschi's Old Sacristy and Michelangelo's New Sacristy (1524), which houses the Medici family tombs. The adjacent Laurentian Library, also designed by Michelangelo, holds one of the world's great manuscript collections.
