Piazza dei Ciompi hosts a permanent small-scale flea market every day except Sunday, with dealers selling antiques, bric-a-brac, old prints, vintage clothing, and second-hand books from stalls and open shop fronts around the square. The pace is unhurried, the prices are negotiable, and the merchandise covers a wide range from genuine antiques to optimistic junk.
The market expands significantly on the last Sunday of each month, when additional dealers set up outdoor stalls across the square and overflow into the surrounding streets, attracting both local collectors and visitors. This Sunday market has a good reputation among antique hunters for occasionally yielding worthwhile finds. The square takes its name from the Ciompi — the wool workers who launched a short-lived uprising here in 1378. The Loggia del Pesce stands on the western side, providing an architectural frame for the market and useful shade in summer.
