Maremma Archaeological and Art Museum

The best museum in Grosseto occupies a palazzo on the Piazza Baccarini and holds an important collection of Etruscan and Roman artefacts from the Maremma. The Etruscans occupied this territory intensively — the region is dotted with their tombs and sanctuary sites — and the museum has finds from the major local sites: bronze objects, pottery, jewellery, and funerary goods spanning the 8th to 3rd centuries BC.

The art section upstairs includes medieval and Renaissance paintings from churches in the province, with works by Sienese artists who worked in the area. The Sassetta altarpiece and works by Ambrogio Lorenzetti are the highlights.

A story
The Maremma was Etruscan territory long before it was Roman, and the archaeological collections here reflect that — finds from sites including Vetulonia, Marsiliana d'Albegna, and Populonia. Vetulonia was one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan League, and its tombs have yielded some of the richest grave goods in central Italy.
