Roman Cistern

A short walk from the centre of Montaione, on the road toward Gambassi Terme, stands a Roman cistern dating from the third century AD. The structure is a large rectangular stone-lined reservoir with a vaulted roof, built to collect and store rainwater for the Roman settlement that occupied this ridge. It held roughly 200,000 litres — an impressive engineering achievement for a rural site of this scale.

The cistern sits near the Villa da Filicaia, on land that has been occupied since Roman times and was later part of a Medici estate gifted to the Tuscan baroque poet Vincenzo da Filicaia in the seventeenth century. The structure is accessible on foot and is maintained by the municipality. It is a minor but genuinely ancient reminder of how deep the human history of this seemingly rural Tuscan hillside runs.
