Chiesa di San Nicolò

The small Romanesque church of San Nicolò stands at the old harbour, steps from the Dogana Veneta, and is one of the oldest buildings in Lazise. The exterior is simple 12th-century Romanesque with a stone bell tower; the interior has retained medieval frescoes on the walls and apse that give it a very different character from the polished baroque churches of the larger lake towns.

The church is not always open — hours are limited and irregular — but it is worth looking for. The location alone, between the old port and the castle walls, makes this one of the most evocative spots in Lazise. Come in the morning before the crowds arrive.

A story
San Nicolò is the patron saint of sailors and fishermen, and his church at the old port of Lazise reflects centuries of dependence on Lake Garda for transport and livelihood. The frescoes inside are attributed by some art historians to followers of Giotto, which would date them to the early 14th century — though the attribution remains debated. Either way, they are among the oldest paintings in the Lake Garda region.
