The Parish Church of St Mary stands at the heart of the old village core of Attard, the finest Renaissance church on Malta. It was built between 1613 and 1624 to designs by the Maltese architect Tumas Dingli, who used the local globigerina limestone to striking effect.
The façade is unusually restrained for a Maltese church — pilasters and pediments in a calm classical idiom, with a single low dome above the crossing. The interior is more elaborate, with a fine 17th-century altarpiece. The dedication is to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, celebrated each year on 15 August with one of the most spectacular festas on the island.
