Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception

The most prominent building in Cospicua, dominating the town's skyline above the dockyard. The interior follows the Maltese baroque pattern — vast nave, gilded vaults, a silver tabernacle — but the facade is unusually severe, a strict Doric composition completed in the mid-nineteenth century.

The titular feast of the Immaculate Conception, on 8 December, is one of the great events of Bormla's calendar, with marching bands, decorated streets, and a procession of the silver statue around the town. Outside feast days, the church is generally open in the morning and again in the late afternoon.

A story
Construction of the present church began in 1637, but the great Doric facade was only completed in 1858. A Luftwaffe bomb crashed through the dome in April 1942 and failed to explode — the unexploded device is still commemorated in a side chapel as a wartime miracle.
