A monumental baroque gateway through the inner Margherita Lines, built in 1736 by Grand Master Manuel de Vilhena. The single arch is flanked by Corinthian pilasters and crowned by a sculpted trophy of arms and the Vilhena coat of arms.
The gate is a short walk from the dockyard along the inner bastion and gives an immediate sense of the depth of Bormla's defences — two complete rings of walls, with St Helen's piercing the inner Margherita line and Notre Dame piercing the outer Cottonera line.
