St Paul's Church

A small Baroque-Doric eighteenth-century church on the steep climb from the dockyard up to the main square. The facade is a restrained exercise in the Doric order that anticipates the great west front of the Immaculate Conception nearby. Inside, the single nave is unexpectedly bright, with whitewashed walls and a modest gilded altarpiece.

Often open when the larger churches are not — useful if your visit falls in the middle of the day. A quick stop, perhaps fifteen minutes.
