One of Malta's stranger archaeological puzzles: a field of grooves carved deep into the limestone, converging and diverging like a diagram of a busy railway junction — hence the name. The ruts are thought to be more than 4,000 years old. You can walk among them freely. They sit a short distance from the cliff edge, making for an easy combined visit.
Clapham Junction Cart Ruts
Mysterious Bronze Age grooves carved into limestone like railway tracks
A story
Nobody knows what made the ruts. They are too narrow for Roman cart wheels and too regular to be natural. Theories range from Bronze Age sledges to ritual pathways — the mystery, after four millennia, remains unsolved.
