Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre

The Vasile Alecsandri National Theatre is one of Moldova's three national theatres and the cultural centrepiece of Baltsi. The building occupies a prominent position near the city centre and hosts a regular programme of drama, opera, and dance. Performances are almost entirely in Romanian.

If you happen to be in Baltsi for an evening, checking the theatre's schedule is worth the effort — productions here are often of genuine quality and ticket prices are modest. The building itself is a striking piece of Soviet-era neoclassical architecture, with a grand facade that sits incongruously well among the surrounding urban fabric.

A story
The theatre is named for Vasile Alecsandri, the 19th-century Moldavian poet and playwright who was also a diplomat, ethnographer, and early champion of Romanian national identity. His plays, collected folk songs, and political writings shaped what became modern Romanian literature.
