Kongsberg Church

Large eighteenth-century church with a rich rococo interior paid for by mining wealth.

Kongsberg Church looks restrained from outside, but the interior is one of the town's best surprises. Built in the eighteenth century, it reflects the wealth and hierarchy of the mining town, with a combined altar, pulpit, and organ rising above the main space.

The church was designed for a much larger congregation than Kongsberg has today, and that scale tells its own story. Look for the chandeliers, royal chamber, and the way German mining culture shaped the building's details.
