Lofotmuseet (Lofoten Museum)

The Lofoten Museum, at Storvågan in Kabelvåg, traces the history of the Lofoten cod fishery — from the medieval Vågar trading post to the great seasonal migrations of fishermen and traders during the cod-spawning runs. The site combines ongoing archaeological excavations of the medieval town with the restored 1815 trader's house, a reconstructed rorbu cabin, and a long open-air collection of historic fishing boats.

A good half-day visit if you take in the boats, the trader's house, the labels, and the archaeology. Open daily in summer, more limited in winter.

A story
The museum site is built around the foundations of the medieval royal trading manor of Vågar, the largest town in northern Norway during the 12th and 13th centuries. The buildings the museum reuses include the 1815 main house of a fish-trader family and a reconstructed rorbu cabin of the type rented out to seasonal fishermen for centuries.
