Svolværgeita

The double-horned granite pinnacle that crowns Mount Floya above Svolvær — the unmistakable silhouette of Lofoten. Climbing the Goat itself (Geita) is a serious rock climb that requires equipment, technique, and ideally a guide; trip operators in Svolvær run guided climbs in summer. Walking to the base of the rock is a much gentler proposition — a steep but well-marked trail from the road behind the town reaches a viewpoint over the harbour in about an hour.

The view back over Svolvær from the Geita ridge is one of the great panoramas of Lofoten. Don't attempt the actual climb without local knowledge and proper gear.

A story
The famous Geita-hopp — the jump from one horn of the goat to the other across a 1.5-metre gap with a 150-metre fall on each side — has killed at least eight climbers since records began. The Norwegian alpinist Ole Daniel Bryn is credited with the first known jump in 1910 after a hard climb up the south face.
