Holmenkollen

Holmenkollen is Oslo's hilltop neighbourhood famous for its ski jump — a landmark visible from much of the city and a defining feature of Norway's sporting identity. The area sits on the western heights above Oslo, surrounded by forest, and is where Norwegians come to ski, hike, and breathe cooler air.

The Holmenkollen ski jump is a striking piece of modern architecture, redesigned for the 2011 FIS Nordic World Ski Championships. You can ride the lift to the top for panoramic views over the Oslofjord and the city below. The Ski Museum at the base is the oldest of its kind in the world, tracing 4,000 years of skiing history.

In winter, the Nordmarka forest trails that start from Holmenkollen are Oslo's most popular cross-country skiing routes. In summer, the same trails are busy with hikers, runners, and mountain bikers. The annual Holmenkollen Ski Festival, usually held in March, draws tens of thousands of spectators and is one of Norway's biggest sporting events.

Getting here is easy: take T-bane line 1 from the city centre to Holmenkollen station (about 20 minutes). The ski jump is a short walk uphill from the station.
