The Whaling Monument

Dramatic harbour sculpture marking Sandefjord's long and complicated whaling history.

The Whaling Monument stands by Sandefjord's harbour and is hard to miss: a ring of bronze whalers, boats, ropes, and whales caught in a violent upward spiral. Sculptor Knut Steen made it in the 1960s, when the town was still closely identified with Norway's Antarctic whaling industry.

It pairs naturally with the Whaling Museum a short walk away. The monument is not a celebration you have to accept at face value; it is more interesting as a public artwork from a town still working through the wealth, danger, skill, and ecological cost tied to whaling.
