The Bory Tucholskie cover roughly 3,200 square kilometres of sandy lowland forest north and east of Chojnice — mostly Scots pine planted on outwash plains left by retreating glaciers. The forest is criss-crossed by rivers, dotted with several hundred lakes, and laced with cycling and walking trails. A large central portion is protected as the Bory Tucholskie National Park.
The Brda river, which threads through the western part of the forest, is one of Poland's best kayaking routes — a slow, clean current with sandy banks, suitable for beginners and unrushed enough to spend several days on. Outfitters in Chojnice and the lakeside villages rent kayaks by the day or arrange longer trips with luggage transfer.
