Juromenha Fortress stands on a rise above the Guadiana, looking east toward Spain. The village is tiny and the fortifications are partly ruined, but the location is superb: this is the border made visible in stone, water, and empty space.
It is farther from Alandroal than Terena, so it needs a car or a very determined cyclist. The reward is one of the most atmospheric stops in the municipality, especially late in the day when the river valley softens.
