Monte Gordo Beach

Monte Gordo, 4 km west of Vila Real along the coast road, is the nearest beach resort and has the best swimming in the immediate area. The beach here is wide, flat, and sandy — typical of the eastern Algarve — backed by pine woods and fronted by calm Atlantic waters that are slightly warmer than on the more exposed western stretches of the coast.

The resort itself is a mid-century development — not the prettiest, but functional, with a strip of seafood restaurants, bars, and beach facilities. Out of peak summer season it is quiet and the beach is almost empty. For those staying in Vila Real without a car, local buses run along the coast road. The beach continues unbroken in both directions — you can walk west toward Manta Rota along a beautiful stretch of undeveloped dune and shoreline.
