Things to Do

Vila Real's compact centre is built on a strict Pombaline grid — unusual for the Algarve — with a large central square that draws most visitors. The riverside is pleasant for an evening stroll. The main sights beyond the square and the lighthouse are actually just outside the city: the marshes and castle at Castro Marim reward a half-day, and the beach resort of Monte Gordo is a short drive west.

The town's real appeal is the ease of crossing between Portugal and Spain. The ferry to Ayamonte takes five minutes and lands you in a different country and a different culture — a worthwhile contrast even for a couple of hours.
