Centum Cellas is a strange Roman ruin a short drive north of Belmonte: a tall stone core standing in open country, more evocative than explanatory. It is usually described as part of a Roman villa complex, though older local stories gave it other uses.
The site is quick to see, but it broadens Belmonte beyond the medieval and Jewish heritage circuit. Go in good light, when the lonely setting does half the work.
