The castle is the town's anchor, a 14th-century fortification on the hilltop above the old streets. You can walk around the walls and the oldest part of the village without making it a formal museum visit.
The best reason to climb up is the view: tiled roofs below, the Alentejo rolling away, and the Serra de Sao Mamede close enough to shape the air and light.
