Ammaia Roman Ruins

Excavated remains of a Roman town in the valley below Marvão.

Ammaia was a Roman town below the Marvão ridge, placed where roads, water, and local mineral wealth met. Excavations have revealed parts of the forum, city walls, baths, roads, and houses, and the small site museum gives shape to what can otherwise look like scattered stone.

It is a useful counterpoint to the castle above: Marvão shows the medieval frontier, while Ammaia shows the older Roman landscape that lay beneath it.
