Marvão Castle crowns the northern end of the village ridge, its keep and curtain walls using the cliff as part of the defence. The castle was strengthened in the 13th century and still feels like a frontier post, built for watching the road between Portugal and Spain.
The best part is the walk along the battlements. On a clear day you can see across the Serra de São Mamede, over the roofs of Marvão, and far into Spanish Extremadura.
