Nisa's historic centre is small, plain and very Alentejo: whitewashed houses, granite edges, modest churches and bits of the old defensive circuit folded into everyday streets. It will not compete with Marvao, but it has a lived-in calm that is easy to like.
Walk it before driving out to the municipality's castles. The centre gives the wider fortress landscape a human scale.
