Montalvao is one of those small Portuguese border villages where the castle, walls and houses seem to belong to the same block of stone. The medieval castle watched the frontier country east of Nisa, and the village still feels remote enough for that history to make sense.
Do not expect a heavily interpreted monument. The reward is the setting: granite lanes, open country and the sense of being near the edge of Portugal.
