Ribeira is the old medieval quarter that lines the Douro riverfront, a tangle of narrow streets climbing the steep slope above the Cais da Ribeira waterfront. The colourful tiled facades stacked up the hillside form Porto's most iconic view — best seen from the other bank in Vila Nova de Gaia, especially in the evening when the buildings catch the light.
At street level, Ribeira is a mix of restaurants catering to tourists, older residents' groceries, laundry hung between windows, and small squares where locals sit on summer evenings. The quarter is UNESCO-listed as part of the historic centre, and restoration has been uneven — some buildings are pristine, others magnificently derelict. The neighbourhood rewards wandering without a plan more than any map-directed tour.
