The castle crowns the old town, its walls standing above white houses and the parish church. Much of the enclosure now holds the town cemetery, which gives the place a quiet, local feel rather than a reconstructed tourist-castle atmosphere.
The best reason to climb up is the view: Santiago's roofs below, cork and cereal country beyond, and a glimpse toward the coast when the air is clear.
