Miradouro de Santa Iria

The best coastal viewpoint on the north of São Miguel, signposted off the EN1-1A about fifteen minutes east of Ribeira Grande. A short walk from the car park brings you to a stone platform on the cliff edge with a near-vertical drop of two hundred metres to the Atlantic and a view that runs west along the coast back toward Ribeira Grande and east to the tea plantations.

A small chapel and a café-snack-bar sit just behind the viewpoint. Time it for the late afternoon, when the light comes in low and the surf below is silver — the cliff faces north, so the sun is to your side rather than in your eyes.
